Reading Morse code is two separate skills wearing one name. Reading it on paper — turning a string of dots and dashes back into letters — is a lookup task you can learn in an afternoon. Step 1: Understand What You're Looking At

Written Morse uses three symbols and two kinds of space:

That spacing is not decoration — it is the entire reason Morse is readable. The string ······ with no spacing could be EEEEEE, III, S S, or H E E. Written as ··· ··· it can only be SS. When you read Morse, the spaces carry as much information as the marks.

Step 2: Decode Letter by Letter

Take each group between spaces and look it up. Try this one:

Step 3: Watch Out for the Mirror Pairs

A handful of codes are reflections of each other, and they cause most beginner misreads on paper:

Step 4: Graduate to Reading By Ear

Real Morse is transmitted, not printed. The path from paper-reader to ear-reader:

  • Hear every character at full speed. On the Morse trainer, tap through the alphabet grid and listen with your eyes closed. You're learning rhythms, not sequences — A is "di-dah," one shape, not "one dot then one dash," two facts.
  • Keep character speed at 15 WPM or above. Slow Morse invites counting, and counting fails the moment anyone sends faster. If you need more time, take it between characters, not within them.
  • Copy behind. Experienced operators write the previous letter while hearing the current one. Don't force this early — just know that hesitating on a letter and catching the next one anyway is a skill, and it grows.
  • Test yourself blind. The trainer's listening quiz plays a mystery letter, number, or word; type what you heard and chase your streak. When words start decoding themselves before you consciously spell them, you're reading Morse.
