Morse code speed is measured in words per minute, and because English words vary wildly in length, the measurement needs a reference word. That word is PARIS.
Why PARIS is the standard
PARIS was chosen because its length in Morse is exactly 50 time units, including the word gap that follows it, and because it is close to the average length of an English word. Send PARIS ten times in a minute and you are sending at 10 WPM. Fifty times and you are at 50 WPM.
Here is where the 50 units come from. All Morse timing is built from one unit — the length of a dot:
- A dot is 1 unit
- A dash is 3 units
- The gap within a letter is 1 unit
- The gap between letters is 3 units
- The gap between words is 7 units
Add up P (.--.), A (.-), R (.-.), I (..) and S (...) with their internal and inter-letter gaps, then the 7-unit word gap, and you land on exactly 50.
The formula: dot length at any speed
Because PARIS is 50 units and a minute is 60,000 milliseconds, one unit at a given speed is:
unit (ms) = 1200 ÷ WPM
That single line lets you work out every timing at any speed:
- 5 WPM — dot 240 ms, dash 720 ms, word gap 1,680 ms
- 10 WPM — dot 120 ms, dash 360 ms, word gap 840 ms
- 15 WPM — dot 80 ms, dash 240 ms, word gap 560 ms
- 20 WPM — dot 60 ms, dash 180 ms, word gap 420 ms
- 30 WPM — dot 40 ms, dash 120 ms, word gap 280 ms
Look at 20 WPM for a moment. A dot is 60 milliseconds. The difference between S (...) and H (....) is one dot plus one gap — about 120 milliseconds. That is roughly the length of a blink. This is precisely why counting cannot work at speed, and why recognising by rhythm is the only approach that scales.
Character speed vs overall speed
A single WPM number hides an important distinction. There are two speeds in play:
- Character speed — how fast the dots and dashes inside each letter are sent.
- Overall speed — how many words per minute actually get through, including the gaps.
In standard timing these are the same. In Farnsworth timing they are deliberately different: characters go out at, say, 18 WPM while the gaps between them are stretched so the overall rate is 8 WPM.
This is the correct way for a learner to run slowly. The alternative — genuinely slowing the characters — changes their rhythm into something countable, which teaches a habit you will have to unlearn to get past about 13 WPM.
How to actually get faster
Climb in small steps
Jumping from 10 to 20 WPM does not work; you simply fail and lose confidence. Move in increments of 1–2 WPM, and only when your accuracy at the current speed is comfortably above 90 percent. A ladder that runs 5, 8, 10, 12, 15, 18, 20 gives you seven manageable steps instead of one impossible one.
Close the gaps before raising character speed
If you are using Farnsworth, the first thing to shorten is the gaps, not the characters. Get to standard timing at your current character speed, then raise character speed and re-open the gaps slightly. Repeat.
Push past comfortable, briefly
Spend most of a session at a speed you can handle and a couple of minutes at a speed you cannot. Copying at a rate where you catch only half the characters is uncomfortable, but it stops you from counting — there simply is not time — and that pressure is what forces recognition to take over.
Fix the specific letters that break
Plateaus are rarely uniform. Usually three or four characters are dragging everything down. Note which letters you miss, then drill those alone. Speed returns quickly once the weak characters are repaired.

What speed do you actually need?
- 5 WPM — enough to read a slowly sent message. A realistic one-month target.
- 13 WPM — the historic licence exam standard in many countries. A meaningful milestone.
- 20 WPM — conversational. You can hold a real contact on air. This is the practical finish line for most learners.
- 25–35 WPM — where many active amateur operators live.
- 40 WPM+ — contest and high-speed territory.
For context at the extreme end: the official code-copying world record is 75.2 WPM, set by Ted McElroy in 1939 — a record that has now stood for over eighty years. At that rate a dot is 16 milliseconds.
Sending speed is a different skill
Most people can send faster than they can receive, which produces a classic beginner mistake: calling another station at a speed you cannot copy the reply at. If you send at 20 WPM, you have implicitly asked for 20 WPM back.
The convention that solves this is QRS — "please send more slowly." It is entirely normal, and experienced operators oblige without comment. See the abbreviations and Q codes page for the full set of on-air shorthand.

Measuring where you are
Take a message you have not heard before, copy it at a fixed speed, and count your errors. Above 90 percent means move up. Between 70 and 90 means stay put and consolidate. Below 70 means drop back a step — you are practising failure, not skill.
